Télé Magazine has asked the actress more about The Mentalist's future. Red John's identity, her relationship with Patrick Jane, the end of the series... the 41 years old actress answered every question.
The Mentalist has just received the award for the most popular series during the Monte-Carlo TV Festival. What kind of emotions do you feel, knowing to be part of such an adventure?
RT: It's strange, because we still have to understand the reason why of such a success around the world. Every time I travel outisde the US, people stop me to tell me how much they love The Mentalist. The other day, a couple from Pakistan stopped me and told me that the series is very popular there. And I've heard the same thing from people coming from Saudi Arabia. Since relationships are complicated with those contries, this shows that some barriers have fallen and people can get closer.
What do people have to expect from Season 5, that will be soon broadcasted in France?
RT: Patrick Jane is going to isolate himself more because of his obsession with Red John. Lisbon is going to question his sanity, and at the same time she will try to help him. And she will be the only one who will be able to get closer to him. Since this moment, he has always tried to keep Lisbon away from that, trying to give her the minimum informations about Red John. But that situation couldn't finally last. He's going to confide in her. During Seaon 5, Lisbon is going to face a man who will make her feel the desire for revenge. And thanks to that, she will understand Jane's feelings towards Red John better. Since that moment, Lisbon has always wanted to catch Red John alive and then bring him to justice. From this moment, she will understand more this desire of revenge.
After five seasons, we still don't know anything about this mysterious Red John. Do you think the writers know his identity?
RT: I think Bruno Heller, the Series Creator, knows his identity since the beginning. He's such a methodical man in his way of working, that I can't imagine him building the series' storyline from nothing.
And do you know who he is?
RT: My family thinks I know who he is. Yet I can assure you I don't. And I think it's better for me this way, it's better for me to play my character without knowing who Red John is.
Maybe Teresa Lisbon is Red John?
RT: No, I don't think so... You know, in the American series, every character has a particular function. There are good and bad characters. Lisbon is like the conscience, the moral compass of the series. It would be too confusing to see her as criminal. Inside the CBI, a lot of people could be Red John, who has become more than a character. He has become like a sort of myth. He must be someone very important, because he has a such a big influence.
Why do you think Lisbon is always single?
RT: A lot of people are wondering the same thing. But that is part of her character. If she is so good in her job, it is also because she gives her body and soul to it, she sacrificed her personal life. And Patrick Jane is her only company. He helps her fulfill her sense of solitude. And I don't think the public would like to see Lisbon in a relationship, since that would have a negative influence in her relationship with Patrick.
Is it true that Season 6 will be the last?
RT: It is possible. It's strange because Bruno Heller has announced on the Internet, before telling us in person, that we will find Red John during Season 6. And that Season 6 could be the last. When I went to the Monte-Carlo TV Festival, all the journalists asked me to confirm this news. But I didn't know. I would have loved to know beforehand. Everyone knew besides me...
After The Mentalist, are you thinking about what are you going to do?
RT: Not really. I've become philosophical. For a long time, I've been scared to find myself without a job because, aside from acting, I couldn't see myself doing anything else to sustain myself. Now, I take things step by step. The only thing I don't see myself doing, is being part of a medical series. Playing a doctor, it's something beyond my possibilities. Remember all those medical terms... impossible! And let's don't talk about the clothes. Wearing a white coat all the time, not for me!
