See Girl Run Review from Florida Film Festival
See Girl Run Review from the Florida Film Festival by Examiner.com
"Don't you sooner or later have to relish the choices you've made?"
So says Marty (William Sadler ) to his daughter Emmie (Robin Tunney ). Emmie has returned to the small Maine town where she grew up in the hopes of rekindling a romance with her high school boyfriend Jason (Adam Scott ). Emmie moved away after high school and both Emmie and Jason are cognizant of the fact that they never technically broke up. When Emmie's sad sack brother Brandon asks if her plan is to cheat on her husband with Jason, Emmie wonders if she's actually been cheating on Jason all along.
See Girl Run is a charming little movie that speaks to that time in your life when you begin to second guess the decisions you've made. Emmie's husband Graham (Josh Hamilton ) is loving and dependable, but she begins to wonder what would have been when Jason sends her flowers out of the blue. Without a word she packs the car and heads home to Maine, telling her brother she has unfinished business.
The premise is not particularly original, but writer/director Nate Meyer populates his movie with vividly drawn characters. I found myself sympathizing both with Emmie as she agonizes over the choices she made, and with Graham, who shows a lot more patience with Emmie than a lot of people would, considering she doesn't even bother to tell him where she's going.
Robin Tunney shows range that I haven't seen from her before, and Jeremy Strong makes Emmie's brother Brandon a heartbreaking character, a man who has real reasons to regret his past. Adam Scott is funny and charming, but he conveys a quiet desperation as the story progresses. It's also refreshing to see William Sadler in a truly likeable role, instead of trying to knock Bruce Willis off the wing of a 747.
There is of course the obligatory scene where Emmie and Jason finally meet. What happens will come as no surprise, but there's something comforting about Emmie realizing what we understood from the very beginning. See Girl Run is a lovely film.
