Why Robin Tunney kicks Emma Thompson's ass

"Don't you hate most actresses when you read their quotes in interviews?" asks Robin Tunney, who is an actress, sitting in a New York bar, giving an interview. "That's why this is weird. You know it's going to deine your personality for a certain number of people, and it makes you realize how many times you say 'like'."
Don't sigh. The 25-year old actress hardly ever says "like", and to be fair, she's only here because of the high praise regarding her upcoming film, Niagara, Niagara.
In it, she stars as a restless misfit with Tourette's Syndrome (and a whiskey jones that would make Bukowski shiver) who embarks on a free-fall road trip with an equally dysfunctional petty thief (played by E.T.'s Henry Thomas). The clichés of most twentynothings-on-the-road flicks, however, are avoided. Complex and credible, the two don't kill anyone, and there isn't a convertible in sight. And Tunney, a Chicago native who first gained notoriety as one of the teenage witches in 1996's The Craft, is remarkable. Her performance earned her best actress honors at last year's Venice Film Festival, beating out both Emma Thompson and Thompson's mother, Phyllida Law.
"I was in fucking shock when I won," Tunney admits. It wasn't long ago, she recalls, when her juiciest roles were in After-School Specials. "I once played the friend of this girl who was getting abused by her boyfriend, but I was, like, 'So what? He's popular! Let him slap you around.'" Of course, when it comes to Niagara, Niagara, she's considerably less forgiving. "I'm really proud of it," she says. "Most films for younger people are so patronizing. I mean, anybody who has any criticism for this I want to kind of... hurt."
